PEINTOLA is an art project which aims to cultivate care of the earth through art, contributing in a positive way to authentic human development, ecology and protecting our natural environment.
Pope St John Paul II in a letter to artists in 1999 wrote that ‘Faced with the sacredness of life and of the human person, and before the marvels of the universe, wonder is the only appropriate attitude.’
This is the inspiration behind all our work, together with Pope Francis’s Encyclical – Laudato Si’ – a letter written to all the people of the world about protecting the environment and promoting a global ecological conversion.
“Authentic human development …..presumes full respect for the human person, but it must also be concerned for the world around us.” ~ Pope Francis (Laudato Si’).
Setting the scene for Laudato Si’s historical message, Pope Benedict wrote in his 40th World Day of Peace 2007 message that “there is an urgent need, even within the framework of current international difficulties and tensions, for a commitment to a human ecology that can favour the growth of the “tree of peace”.
Our art project is for anyone interested in the art of seeing and painting. Through progressive colour studies, the painter learns to perceive the full spectrum of colour in all its refinements and beauty as presented to the eye by nature’s light. The colours we see are determined by the quality of light illuminating the subject, the quality depending on the kind of day, the time of day and the seasonal angle of the light. There are no formulas to capture these unique moments in time. It is only by learning to see, and what we see is dependent on how we see. It takes a lot of paint and many years to learn the art, the reward being a fuller artistic expression of our love of God’s garden - the earth, and its inhabitants, contributing to care and protection of nature and the environment.
Joining Peintola is free and open to anyone over 18 years old. We welcome all - people of any religion or none. This is about the art of seeing and painting, about developing an awareness of colour relationships in nature and the colour masses in proportion to each other. Paint brushes are not necessary when starting out, just a simple pallette/painting knife. Why? Because the focus is on colour masses and colour relationships. These are the building blocks.
